Free computer recycling service
Free WEEE computer recycling service

What is described as Britain's first free consumer WEEE collection service has been launched by Midex, a specialist in electrical and IT recycling.

Under the new service, WEEECollect.IT, the company will collect items such as TVs, computers, printers and other everyday electrical and electronic goods direct from householders' front doors and driveways. There is no charge for the service. The only products it won't handle are fridges and freezers.

The company plans to have its team visit towns and cities at least once every three months on a rotational basis. It will aim to notify each area in advance when it will be calling, and has equipped its vans with bells to alert consumers of their presence (a kind of high-tech backward glance to the traditional rag-and-bone man).

It will also encourage consumers to hand over spent household batteries for recycling in accordance with the European Battery Directive.

Chris Spooner, a member of the Midex management team, says: 'We have been absolutely bowled over by the response we have been receiving from the public. It's incredible to see people standing outside waiting for the arrival of our van.'

The initiative was launched on a trial basis in Aldershot, Farnborough and Guildford late last autumn. It is based on an existing commercial WEEECollect service operated by the company, under which it places skips at business premises for filling with unwanted electronic equipment, and replaces them periodically through the year.

• The WEEE Directive is shorthand for the European Parliament and Council Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (2002/96/EC).
