Fork-lift trucks that guide themselves using RFID
![]() Whilst opinions may differ on the likely rate of takeup of RFID (radio frequency identification) to replace barcodes, it is possible to use RFID in quite a different way to improve the efficiency of fork-truck operations, and this has been exploited in two new models of lift truck from Jungheinrich. The EKS 210 and EKS 312 vertical order pickers are equipped with state-of-the-art RFID equipment, and this interacts with fixed guidance transponders embedded in the warehouse floor. The fork-lift truck driver receives picking instructions wirelessly from the warehouse management system, and then the warehouse management system automatically guides the truck to the location in which the goods are stored. The RIFD transponders tell it where to go. The truck travels via the shortest route and at a speed that ensures energy consumption is minimised. The driver needs only to engage the safety controls on the truck and then relax. Jungheinrich says the system can potentially boost productivity within the warehouse by some 25 per cent. The RFID transponders are said to be no bigger than the size of a thumbnail, and to be quickly and easily inserted into the floor within the aisles of the warehouse or distribution centre.
