DHL parcel service hits the high street in WHS deal
![]() DHL Express is targeting the consumer parcels market with a scheme to install parcel despatch points or 'DHL Servicepoints' in 400 WH Smith high-street stores (out of the total of 557 stores). The company says the development will more than double the number of its existing Servicepoints to 750. DHL says deal will 'expose the brand' to the one million customers visiting WH Smith stores daily. They will be able to despatch parcels in six pre-defined container sizes ranging from an A4 envelope to 'a box large enough to fit a printer or fax machine'. Users pay and can actually pack and despatch their goods on the spot at the store. The boxes themselves are free, and there is no explicit weight limit. Charges are based on size and destination, and all consignments require signature on receipt. Tracking is offered on a special web site. Ken McCall, chief executive for the UK and Ireland, says the company identified a gap in the market. 'Our research showed us that consumers want choice, easy access and well priced express delivery services – which is exactly what the Servicepoints offer.' DHL is particularly keen to pick up parcels business over Christmas.
