Collection of returns 'would prompt more etail sales'
More consumers would buy online if they were given the option to have returned goods collected from their home or work place, rather than having to take them to a local post office, according to research conducted by YouGov on behalf of auto-identification specialist Zetes. The company says 71 per cent of respondents favoured this choice, and 63 per cent said it would prompt them to spend more. Home collection of returned goods is resisted by many retailers who fear it will simply increase the volume of returns. Some garment retailers already have to cope with return rates of 30 per cent or more - many of which are prompted by consumers who knowingly over-order simply to examine goods for texture or size. However, the survey raises the question of whether such retailers have always weighed the risk of increased returns against the likelihood of a greater rise in overall sales.
