‘Set up your own vehicle tracking service’

If you’re thinking of setting up and running a vehicle tracking system for external customers, or even if you’re just looking for a system providing more control of your own fleet, a company called gtrack would like to help you.

It’s offering what amounts to all the components of a full tracking system (web server hardware, software and in-vehicle GPS “black box”), either individually or as a complete package that you can host yourself. It will also host a system on a subscription basis on its own servers.

Features include a variety of daily reports on driving and vehicle performance, along with a range map display options such as aerial photos and 3D mapping.

Behind the idea is Alex Crawford, who several years ago launched LocatA.net, a free online tracking service based on mobile phone technology, which is still being offered and claims over 6,000 users.

Prices for gtrack range from the low hundreds for individual components to around £5,000 for a complete reseller package. Extending the concept of easy “off the-shelf” access to the system, you can even buy the various elements online from the company’s own web site.
