The rise of mobile payments in home shopping

“Home” shoppers of the future will increasingly make their purchases using mobile phones. That was one of the messages emerging from the Mail & Express Delivery conference mounted by Triangle last week. Consultant Chris Pearce-Ramwell pointed out that many today’s young teenagers had no memory of a world without mobiles, and many would expect to use phones for almost all their transactions.

These findings are underlined by a report from Juniper Research suggesting that the gross transaction value of payments made via mobile phone for digital goods will increase five times to more than $300 billion globally within five years. That total includes both “soft” purchases such as music and tickets and physical goods; and significantly, Juniper says that ticketing alone will account for 40 per cent of the total. It also believes that the Far East and Europe will between them account for 60 per cent of mobile purchases by 2013.
