Abel & Cole opens in Kent

Organic home delivery specialist Abel & Cole has added a distribution depot in Kent to its expanding network, and says it plans to create 40 new jobs in the area over the next three years. The new 5,000 sq ft premises at Larkfield Trading Estate, Aylesford were acquired with support from investment promotion agency Locate in Kent.

Abel & Cole was set up in 1988, and delivers a variety of organic goods including seasonal 'fruit and veg' boxes, cheese, meat and wine. Its network of distribution centres already includes Wimbledon (its head office), Andover, Ongar, Warrington, Tamworth and Leeds.

According to regional depot manager Nicholas Cannell, the Aylesford base will be able to cover parts of Kent and Sussex that were previously supplied from Wimbledon. 'Our new Kentish base will reduce our food miles considerably,' he says.

Abel & Cole is one of a small but growing band of retailers who actively encourage customers to buy a Hippo Box if they are worried that there will be nowhere outside their home to leave the goods.

The company says it now delivers to 40,000 consumers across the country a week.
