Pallet networks get their own representative body
Eight leading pallet network operators have come together to form an independent body, the Association of Pallet Networks, to represent their interests. Founder members are said to represent over 600 hauliers, 24,000 vehicles and 11 million sq ft of warehouse space. The inaugural members include nearly all the biggest networks - Palletforce, Palletways, Pall-Ex, Fortec, Palletline, United Pallet Network, Palletrack and The Pallet Network. The chairman is Paul Sanders, now managing director of Deker Trailers, but previously head of UK Pallets, the Business Post subsidiary (and not, ironically, one of the members so far). The association says its objectives are to raise awareness of the sector and to represent the interests of members in dealings with media and Government. It also aims to provide a platform for discussion, analysis and the promotion of pallet networks. It has already set up a health and safety forum group, and has appointed logistics consultancy Key3 Partners to conduct a detailed study of the sector, using online benchmarking to collect and collate information. The association says the average vehicle fill for pallet networks is around 73 per cent, compared with a national average of 51 per cent. This equates to an estimated reduction of 800 vehicle movements a day.
