Summer 2007
Amtrak quadruples double-decker fleet
Evidence that Amtrak is thriving after its restructuring at the turn of the year comes with news that it is enlarging its embryonic double-deck trailer fleet, adding 18 to the half-dozen previously in its fleet. Managing director Alan Jones says the new trailers will reduce operating costs on some of the company's busiest routes. The 13.6 metre trailers are being built by Lawrence David and supplied by Fraikin. By the end of August they will be running on the trunk routes between the company's hub at Aldridge in the West Midlands and some of its 75 depots nationwide. Amtrak also operates 130 single deck trailers. Also in the pipeline are new scanners that will allow delivery drivers to provide real-time proof of delivery information. A credit card ordering system is also due for implementation in the next few months.
