TNT Upgrades Parts Service
TNT Express says it is spending £2 million on upgrading its same-day delivery service (branded TNT Sameday), and is enhancing its related Storapart parts distribution system as part of the initiative. Whilst Storapart has been around for many years, a new warehouse stock management system called Storapart Distribution System (SDS) has now been introduced, and is said to have created a common approach across TNT Storapart sites throughout the world. The whole Sameday service should benefit from a new web-based system called the Sameday Common Operating System, which calculates parcel delivery rates automatically, as well as recommending the closest driver for each collection and allocating drivers' payments. Drivers also gain from being issued with mobile computers. This development alone accounts for £850,000 of the investment. Recently our sister-magazine m.logistics reported in more detail on TNT's deployment of handheld computers, which in the UK are mostly Symbol MC9000-series ruggedised units with GPRS connectivity.
