RFID growth spelled out

Around 1.71 billion RFID tags will be sold worldwide in 2007, according to RFID specialist research organisation IDTechEx.

The total RFID market value (including all hardware, systems and integration) across all countries will be $4.96 billion. By far the biggest segment of this market, says the organisation, will be RFID cards, which are used for wide-ranging application such as identification, access, travel and so on.

Leaving aside card applications, IdTechEx says 2007 market value for other RFID tags (for instance labels, fobs and tickets) will be $1.97 billion. And of that market, it says 58.4 per cent will be in the US and 33 per cent in Europe.

It predicts that the market will rise to $27.88 billion in 2017, by which time it says many new market sectors will have been created, such as the market for real-time location systems using active RFID, which will itself be worth more than $6 billion in 2017.

This research is contained in an IDTechEx report entitled RFID Forecasts, Players and Opportunities 2007-2017.
