Track your team by mobile phone
You can track vehicles or people without using the GPS satellite network, simply by monitoring the position of their mobile phones. Although this technology has been slow to evolve, with some users fearing privacy issues over the use of phone location data, commercial services based on it are now coming on stream. One of the latest called Verilocation, and is from geographic information systems specialist Overview Mapping. The company has aimed to make it a simple and accessible service; it uses cell-site information from all four major UK mobile phone networks, and is offered as a pay-as-you-go service that is accessed over the Internet. It can be used with any mobile for which the user has given permission.
Cell-site location is typically accurate to within about 100 metres, which Overview says is adequate for many applications; and it is linking this information with displays using its own UK digital street mapping to estimate the exact location of the mobile. The company says the system can be integrated with users' back-office systems or used in stand-alone mode.
